Six years into the Opportunity Zone (OZ) program, the work has shifted. Tax professionals are asked less to plan new funds and counsel new investors, and more about guiding existing funds through the working capital safe harbor period. At this stage, many clients are running into the same problems. Due to the pandemic, inflation, and supply chain disruptions, costs have been higher than expected. Some funds have had to shut down. Others wish to revise their written plans. Others are learning for the first time that they failed to prepare an adequate written plan. We discuss the patterns we’re seeing, and how to help these clients.
